I’ve heard before that being a server is one of the most “stressful” jobs out there. And I don’t argue with that at all. Some days can be slow and others, very busy. And it’s always unexpected. Last night at work, I took the payment for this one lady who quickly paid cash and told me to keep the leftover change. All had seemed normal, until over 10 minutes later the same woman came back in. She ran to me and put money in my hand. I was in shock when she told me that while driving away, she had realized she only tipped a small amount of change. And that it didn’t feel right. After saying thank you I made sure to tell her that it was unnecessary. I said that she didn’t need to tip me at all. And then there was silence. Until right before walking out the door she said to me “I didn’t want you to be insulted.” After that I gave it some thought and then came to this conclusion: Whenever I mention that “tips don’t matter” I get the strangest looks. Especially from my fellow employees. Though I do make awesome tips at my job, I try not to pay attention to it. I don’t believe that tips are deserved, but they are a blessing. No matter how annoying someone may be. I strive to give great service because that is my job, and all I want in return is a happy customer.
