A Paralympian, a Gold Medallist & my Uncle. When he was 17, he lost his leg in a farming accident. He received a prosthetic leg and was still able to walk, work and do everything in between. I’ve never even seen my Uncle as any form of disabled, but in fact one of the most able bodied and well spirited people I know. In December 2012 he was at work and fell out of a semi, with the semi truck driving over top of his good leg. Since then, he has not regained feeling in his leg and has been in a wheelchair. In March 2013 he travelled to Russia with the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Team and won gold. The following year he was invited to play again on Team Canada but this time for the 2014 Paralympic Games held in Sochi, Russia. I was able to travel with him and several other members of my family and witness him win a Gold Medal at the Paralympic Games. I could not be any more proud of this man and all he has overcome. It’s an inspiration to anyone who has ever had obstacles, and remind them to never let anything stop you from accomplishing something great.
